Gettons in Hands

Unreviewed import — a classic from the public domain; its solution has not been machine-checked yet.

math
Suppose you have a certain number of tokens in the right hand and another number in the left hand. If you transfer 8 tokens from the left hand to the right hand, and then transfer back one and a quarter times the number that remains in the right hand back to the left, how many tokens are there in each hand at the end? If you know that there are twice as many tokens in the right hand as in the left after these transfers, determine how many tokens were there originally in each hand.

Solution

Commit an attempt to unseal the proof. Write your answer — right or wrong, thinking it through is the point.
