How it plays

• Red moves first. Generals stay in the palace and may never face each other on an open file.
• Horses are blocked at the leg, elephants at the eye and by the river; cannons capture over exactly one screen; soldiers turn sideways after crossing.
• Checkmate or having no legal move loses. Repeating a position three times is a draw, unless one side was giving check every move, which loses.
